The aim of the present BA thesis is to determine the role of ball games and ball activities in pupils' everyday life. Our basic objectives were as follows. We wanted to find out whether there exist any differences between boys' and girls' preferences regarding different sports activities, certain games and ball activities during their PE classes. We also tried to find out whether the interviewees feel frightened while performing the activities mentioned above. Furthermore, we were interested in the differences between boys' and girls' preferences regarding joining different sports clubs, and we wished to identify the interviewees' favourite ball activity. Finally, we tried to determine whether any of the two genders takes part in sports competitions more frequently than the other, and whether there are any differences between boys' and girls' self-esteem in ball games.
The research was conducted on a sample of 333 third-, fourth- and fifth-graders at some of the primary schools in the Gorenjsko region. The data were gathered in the form of an anonymous questionnaire. Answers to the qualitative questions were entered into charts, and the number of same answers was recorded. Regarding the quantitative data, descriptive statistics (i.e. individual answer frequency, arithmetic mean and standard deviation) were calculated first, and then statistical analyses were carried out by means of a t-test (where the data were measured on the interval scale) and a chi-square test (with the data on the nominal scale). Finally, the data were presented in charts and interpreted.
The results obtained in the research prove the following facts. Statistically, gymnastics and dancing are more popular with girls, whereas ball games are more popular with boys. We found out there are no statistically significant differences in the popularity of selected known ball games with respect to pupils' gender. Among various ball activities, balloon games and bouncing a ball with hands tend to be more popular with girls, while advancing and hitting the ball using one’s feet or a stick are more popular with boys. Children of both sexes do not feel fear during ball activities. The percent of boys and girls who participate in a sports club is approximately the same. Interviewees' favourite sports club is football (22.3 %), closely followed by volleyball (15.2 %). There exist no significant gender-related differences in participating in sports competitions. Boys' self-esteem in the field of ball games is considerably higher than the girls'. |
