Sekundarni naslov: Nutritional habits of elderly people living at home
Sekundarni povzetek: Aging is a process that is accompanied by biological, psychological and social changes. These changes can affect the nourishment of elderly people. Elderly people are becoming less independent with years and more dependent on others. Family members, to whom the elderly people trust the most, offer them assistance. On the market, there are various services that provide assistance in different cases. In the diploma work I have been investigating how the elderly people eat, which foods are usually on their menu, what makes it difficult for them to eat and what are their activities during the day, and how active are they daily. I interviewed ten elderly people from the surrounding of Metlika. Elderly people were living in their home environment, and they get one meal a day from the nursing home for elderly people. I found that interviewees order lunch to their home, because they are no longer capable of individual preparation of the meal. They eat monotonous food, they miss meals and do not drink the recommended daily amount of liquid. Elderly people have frequent health problems, which hinder them in the preparation and consumption of food. The most common activities are watching TV, socializing with family members, friends, and short walks. They need help from family members for heavy duty tasks. Interviewees often feel lonely because they have lost their spouse and live alone. From the results of research, it can be seen that there is a need to increase attention to nutritional and social care for elderly people, who are living at home. It should be ensured for elderly people to have healthy meals and correct rhythm in eating. To maintain independent living, it is important that they are physically active and maintain social contacts. Relatives of the elderly people and the local community in which they live can contribute significantly to quality livelihoods in their old age.
