In today's age of the Internet it is of high importance for librarians to understand how web 1.0 and 2.0 works and to take advantage of libraries' web sites and Facebook pages in order to achieve better promotion and communication with users. The goal of the research was to find out whether Coastal-Karst public libraries use both of these tools for promotion of their services and what the librarians' attitude towards such services is. In the research we used two research methods. With the help of content analysis we wanted to find out if Coastal-Karst public libraries use web tools 1.0 (web sites) and 2.0 (Facebook) in order to promote their services and on which front they are more active (whether on web sites or Facebook). We wanted to show when the libraries are most active when it comes to refreshing these tools, which services they promote with them, and whether posts on web sites and Facebook differ in any way. With the help of an online survey we wanted to show the attitude of the librarians of the Coastal-Karst public libraries towards such promotion, which target groups of users they want to attract with such promotion, and whether they have guidelines which would define the content and volume of publications on web sites and Facebook. The analysis of the content was conducted over the period of six months, from the beginning of May until the end of October 2014, whereas the online survey took time for three months (from January 11th until April 11th 2015). The sample consisted of six Coastal-Karst public libraries and twelve librarians who work there. We concluded that the mentioned libraries do use such tools for promotion of their services, but they do not have any established guidelines that would define what and how much would be published. The research showed a negative attitude of librarians towards such promotion, for they believe it to be unnecessary and that it does not benefit the library's activity. |
