diplomsko delo

Fantasy novel The name of the wind in Slovene translation |
Sekundarni povzetek: |
In addition to fantasy literature for children, youth and adult fantasy novels have become increasingly popular in the past years. Last year, the Slovenian translation of Rothfuss' novel The Name of the Wind reached the bookstore shelves. This specific genre is quite a tough nut to crack for a translator - due to the length of the literary work, apart from thorough knowledge of language, meticulousness and resourcefulness, one needs a great amount of patience if he or she wants the translation to be of good quality and consistency. In addition to staying faithful to the contents, it is important to try to maintain the style of the literary text to the highest level possible. In the novel The Name of the Wind, a number of stylistic devices can be found, therefore I wanted to find out how successfully the translator transferred them into Slovenian language. I will present examples of selected proper names, temporally marked words and suchlike, and check the correspondence of the original with the target text. The comparison will show which translation processes and strategies were chosen by the translator in the process of transferring from one language to the other and to what extent they interfered with the original. My aim is to establish whether any individual stylistic shifts influenced the final style of the translated text and whether the style of the translated text is different from the style of the original due to said shifts. |
