trendi, izzivi in tendence
Abstract

Translation of English literature into Slovene and Slovene literature into English in the last 5 years: Trends, challenges and tendencies |
Secondary abstract: |
The master thesis presents the analysis of translated literature from English into Slovene and Slovene literature works translated into English between 2013 and 2017. The aim of the thesis is to demonstrate which genres of literary works are translated, to determine the reasons for the selection and to explain the prevalence of foreign literature on the Slovene book market. The data were collected from the translation database of the Public Book Agency and the COBISS.SI bibliographic database. The analysis showed that novels as a genre predominate among the translations, which indicates its popularity among readers. This is also probably the reason behind publishers' decisions to publish and translate this particular literary genre. However, the data also showed a high percentage of translated poetry of Slovene authors into English, which is probably influenced by state aid in the form of subsidies for translators. As considering current trends, we confirmed the hypothesis that there is a significantly higher number of translations of English literature into Slovene as compared to Slovene original literary works into English. The research gave an overview of translations published over a 5-year period and demonstrated the need for an information system to collect the data about published translations. Thus, the research can serve as a background for further researches. |
