Language is a system of symbols which are designed to communicate between people. Language takes an entire lifetime to develop, whereas its most intensive development takes place precisely in the first years of life. The significance of this is particularly heightened in the case of the young child since it represents the child’s development also in other areas. Nursery teachers should be well aware of this, as well as all those persons that spend considerable time with the child. During this time, the child's speech is becoming increasingly integrated; from a newborn who only communicates non-verbally, the child is in a very short time transformed into an active speaker. A nursery teacher should be particularly aware of the process of language development in order to appropriately motivate and involve the child in communication, which is the reason why I defined this process in the theoretical part of the thesis. The theoretical part, backed up by a variety of literature, presents the development of language, factors of speech development, and linguistic activities in a nursery context as performed by a nursery teacher. In the pre-school period, when children are attending nursery care, the nursery teacher as the group leader plays an important role, since she directs, stimulates, recognises and guides the children on the path to successful language development. A questionnaire for nursery teachers was used in the empirical part of the thesis, which confirmed that the influence of the nursery carer is of utmost importance, setting the child an important linguistic example. The planned activity most frequently used by nursery teachers to promote language development is telling stories. Besides planned activities, available time is also used to promote language development during the daily routine, when taking a walk, during playtime, and so on. The nursery teacher must therefore take care for the culture of her own language, if she is to set a linguistic example to the child that has been entrusted into her care. |
