Factors of parental mediation of child's use of information and communication technology (ICT) |
Sekundarni povzetek: |
Parental mediation means the use of strategies to reduce the negative and optimize the positive impacts of information and communication technology (ICT) on the child. The research focused on those that are most frequently mentioned in the literature, i.e., active mediation, active internet security mediation, monitoring, restrictive mediation and technical restriction. We were interested in how they relate to the age of children, the size of the family and the characteristics of the parents, i.e., with age and education, ICT self-efficacy, attitudes towards the internet and concerns about the child's use of ICT. We also included the variables of the amount of ICT use by the parent and the child. The online questionnaire was duly completed by 511 parents of primary school children from 1st to 9th grade. After analysing the form of the relationship between each type of mediation and the age of the child, in addition to correlation analyses, we also performed hierarchical analyses for each type of mediation and separately for younger (1st-5th grade) and older (6th-9th grade) children. It turned out that the child's age is negatively and linearly related to active and restrictive mediation, and other strategies indicated a curvilinear relationship with this variable. We found that each selected factor was statistically significantly related to at least one type of mediation. Age and education of parents explained the largest share of variance in monitoring older children, the number of children in the family in active mediation of young children, the inclusion of variables of parents' attitudes to ICT in active mediation of internet security, and variables of the amount of ICT use in restrictive mediation of young children. |
