Grading physical education in the region of Ljubljana |
Sekundarni povzetek: |
My degree shows the problem of grading physical education. My basic aim and the reason for choosing this topic was to show nonsense of grading physical education with the help of literature and opinions of teachers about different ways of grading.
In the research took part 136 teachers from 29 primary schools of the district of Ljubljana. It is obvious from the results that not all the teachers gave answers to the questionnaire. With the principals of each school it was agreed that 10 to 15 questionnaires were sent to each school. That means that the response of the teachers was awful. The teachers who answered to the questionnaire were on the average 43 years old. The average working period (age) was 19 years. That indicates that the graduated teachers of junior teaching got employment immediately after the finished study. Today the situation is completely different. The youngest teacher who attended the questionnaire was 26 years old. The participants were of different titles, the most of them have the title adviser. According to this title I concluded that the results could be better and more professional than they were.
The questionnaire was answered by the teachers from the first to the fifth class. The number of done questionnaires was more or less the same in separate classes. The questionnaire was solved even by 7 teachers of physical education in the ninth class. The pattern of measuring consisted of the opinions of teachers from the first and the second triad. But the problem of grading of physical education includes actually all the classes, so I left those 7 teachers in my research.
The teachers who answered the questionnaire taught physical education in the school year 2010/2011 mostly by themselves. There was a small percentage of teachers who didn't teach physical education mostly by themselves. That means that they taught physical education in previous years of their working period, but now their teaching is not of the best quality because of their old age and they left teaching of this subject to the younger colleagues. At some schools that was the reason that physical education was taught one year by them and another year by the teacher of physical education.
In the questionnaire the teachers decided which type of grading they found the most appropriate in the first and in the second triad. They explained their decision with arguments. They gave their opinion about not giving marks in physical education and their suggestions for improving descriptive grading. The results of the research were as I had expected in contradiction to the basic goal of physical education.
The most significant result of the research is that descriptive grading is the most important way of grading for the teachers in the first triad and numerical grading for the teachers for the second triad. Regarding the very high result of descriptive grading in the first triad that way of grading was accepted as the most suitable grading for the most of the teachers. It is very interesting that it is clear from the research that teachers want to give grades for physical education. On the basis of the research and its results I conclude that grading of physical education is really a serious dilemma and that the teachers don’t have enough or poor knowledge about grading physical education. |
