diplomsko delo

Translating abbreviations related to the activities of the European Union |
Sekundarni povzetek: |
Abbreviations became a part of our everyday life; they are used in all sorts of different contexts from highly specialized technical and professional texts to completely informal ways of communication. A very productive area for the creation of new abbreviations are institutions of the European Union, a number of agencies and programs that are implemented are better known by their acronyms as by their full names. In this paper, we describe the characteristics of acronyms, their historical and contemporary use, the organization of translating services in the European Union, various theoretical approaches in translation studies and modern information and communication technologies as well as their impact on translation and translating profession. In the empirical part of the thesis, we observed what happens to abbreviations in translation from one language to another. Our findings are based on the analysis of a small selection of abbreviations and the search results of online language corpora and terminological databases. We were interested whether the abbreviations remain in the original version and are written with or without explanation, or are they translated and also if there are any other evident solutions we can find. |
